Dementia Awareness Week 2018 (4th to 10th June)

The Alzheimer Scotland’s Dementia Awareness Week 2018 (4th to 10th June) is coming to the villages of Juniper Green and Baberton, Currie and Balerno.


We are excited to be holding events in all three villages, they will be packed with fun events, information sessions and various activities.


We hope you can join us, there will be something for everyone to get involved with.


“Dementia Friendly Service of Communion”
Sunday June 3rd 2.30pm – 4pm
Balerno Parish Church (all welcome)

Balerno Parish Church cordially invites you to a special communion service on Sunday the 3 rd of June 2018 at 2:30 pm. There will be refreshments afterwards in the Ogston hall. RSVP at the church office 0131 449 7245 by the 28th of May for catering purposes.


“Drop in Time”
Monday June 4th 1pm – 4pm
Currie Library

People from Juniper Green and Baberton, Currie and Balerno who would like more information on Dementia and Dementia Friendly Pentlands or have any questions regarding support available locally can drop into Currie Library where a member from Dementia Friendly Pentlands will be accompanied by an Occupational Therapist Stephanie Lumsden.


“Tea Dance”
Tuesday June 5th 2pm – 4pm
Gibson Craig Hall, Currie

Currie Community Council is holding a Tea Dance at Gibson Craig. All welcome! They will have a live band so come along and have a wee dance and a tea cake. Please share with anyone you feel would be interested. No entrance fee, however, donations on the day welcome and will go towards the dementia cafe ‘Tuesday’s Tea and Tunes’.


“Scotlands’ Big Night Out” Film
Wednesday June 6th 6.30pm – 8pm
St Joseph’s Hall, Balerno

Lads & Lassies! Revisit those far off Halcyon Saturday Nights! A Not to be Missed Opportunity! Film Evening “Scotland’s Big Night Out!” at St Joseph’s Hall in Balerno. Tickets from Balerno Parish Church Office Mon – Fri 9am – 12noon or contact Kay Latimer: 0131-449-6186 No entrance fee, however, donations on the day welcome and will go towards the dementia cafe PALM.


“Creativity, Interaction and Dementia” Course
Thursday June 7th 2pm – 4pm
Juniper Green Parish Church Hall

In this workshop, we will explore how creativity of all kinds can help communication and expression flow more freely – perhaps through colour, music, rhythm, poetry, stories or simply looking at everyday items in new ways. There will be space to create in a range of ways, and to share experiences, questions and reflections. Ideas and tips will be available to take away, along with any creativity created on the day! The course will be facilitated by Dr Martha Pollard, Dementia Befriending & Carer Support Programmes Manager from Eric Liddell Centre.


“Meet the DFP Team”
Saturday June 9th 9.30am – 1pm
Farmers Market, Balerno

An opportunity to meet the Dementia Friendly Pentlands team at the Farmers Market in Balerno. We encourage everyone to stop at our stall if you need some advice or information on dementia or simply for a wee chat, we are all very friendly. We’re also available to talk to anyone who might be interested in the work we do or would like to get involved.


“Coffee Morning”
Saturday June 9th 10am – 12noon
Juniper Green Parish Church Hall

Drop in for a coffee or a cuppa in Juniper Green, where Juniper Green Parish Church opens its doors to everyone. Pop in to meet Petra, the development worker from Dementia Friendly Pentlands and the lovely folk at Juniper Green Parish Church who are supporting the work of Dementia Friendly Pentlands.
