Intergenerational and schools outreach

An intergenerational project has been undertaken to tackle stigma and raise awareness and understanding of dementia in the local schools.

Our aim:

  • Increased awareness amongst young people of dementia
  • Better understanding amongst young people about how they can play an active part in creating dementia friendly communities.
  • We will support the schools in developing intergenerational projects; possibly taking the form of music, singing and art.

What are we doing?

We have been asked by Balerno High School to deliver lessons that can be presented to S5 and S6 about Dementia. We aim to extend this initiative to Currie Community High School and the three local primary schools.

We are working with pupils from Currie Community High School who volunteer with the Tuesday’s Tea & Tunes café.
We are also collaborating with Nether Currie Primary School to explore ways of developing pupil’s knowledge and understanding of dementia.

Our impact

Ideal outlets for this type of project are the Palm Café in Balerno Tuesday’s Tea & Tunes in Currie and Juniper Green Lunch Club.

The project has the potential to affect the dementia awareness of a large number of pupils.

We can also offer one off information sessions to youth organisations such as Scouts, please get in touch if you are interested in discussing this.
