Dementia Friendly Pentlands is a volunteer organisation run across the communities of Juniper Green, Currie and Balerno. The idea was born out of a desire to give people living with dementia a stronger PRESENCE in local communities by building communities that are SAFE, SUPPORTIVE, STRONG and RESILIENT enough to support people living with dementia and their carers.
Creating a community where all are included, where all can experience a sense of belonging and where all can continue to express themselves is critical to the efforts of Dementia Friendly Pentlands.

Our vision
Our vision is that this project will provide the support to help people sustain the social contacts and activities that are important to them and provide a safe environment to process the changing emotions and circumstances that dementia brings. This will be achieved by ensuring that those around them – family, friends, the local community; have a clear understanding of the changing support needs of someone living with dementia and are equipped with the skills to maintain positive interactions with them.
WITHDRAWAL, ISOLATION AND LONELINESS – are they symptoms of dementia? OR are they symptoms of the community’s response to dementia?

What does Dementia Friendly Communities mean?
The voices of people living with dementia and their carers should be at the start and the heart of the process of creating dementia friendly communities. People living with dementia have expressed that for them, a dementia friendly community is one which supports them to: Carry on doing the same things they have always done – like going to the shops, getting on a bus, playing golf, or just sitting in a park. Find their way around and feel safe. Keep in touch with people and feel that they belong in their community.

Balerno Palm Cafe - The PALM café is held in the St Joseph’s Centre, Balerno on the last Tuesday of the month from 2.30pm to 4pm.
Currie’s Tea and Tunes - Held every 2nd Tuesday of the month at the Gibson Craig Memorial Hall, Currie.
Our Community Conversations project - Work is underway to assess the current strengths and gaps when it comes to meeting the needs of people living with dementia.
